Mozambique

Last week I left Swaziland and headed up to Tofo, Mozambique for a week at the beach! All Out Africa offers tours as well as volunteer (and intern) placements so I joined their Tofo beach tour. Tofo is an amazing little town close to Inhambane, Mozambique. It was a 12 hour drive from Swaziland but it was well worth the trip! While in Tofo I had the opportunity to lay in the sun on the beautiful, empty beaches, kayak out to a small island in the bay, take surfing lessons, and swim with Whale Sharks on an ocean safari. All of which minus the surfing lessons were included in my tour!

The place I stayed was a very cool backpackers lodge right on the beach where the guests stay in little beachy huts. Tofo seems to be a little hidden paradise because the beaches were almost always empty the entire week we were there. The roads are lined with palm trees and everyone is very welcoming to the small amounts of tourists which pass through.

Swimming with Whale Sharks was an amazing experience! Tofo is an area where the large sea creatures frequent yearly and I was lucky enough to be in Tofo at the perfect time of year to get to see them! The whale shark I was able to swim with was 6 meters long, and was only a juvenile whale shark! Whale sharks are the largest breed of sharks, however they are entirely filter feeders and are not predators making it safe to swim with them. It was the highlight of my trip!

All Out Africa also has an office in Tofo working on marine conservation projects so it was cool to get to see the creatures that the organization is putting time and resources into conserving!

(Hopefully I will figure out how to post the video my friend took of the whale shark!)

stay tuned,

Kelly
